Xabi Alonso Linked with Liverpool Return as Pressure Mounts on Arne Slot
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is the leading candidate to replace under-fire manager Arne Slot at Anfield this summer, according to a former Premier League chief executive. The speculation follows Liverpool's 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City, a result that has intensified scrutiny on Slot's position after a difficult domestic season.
Speaking to Football Insider, Keith Wyness, the former CEO of Everton, claimed that Alonso is effectively waiting for Slot's departure to be confirmed. "I know that there are two things that a lot of my Liverpool friends and contacts are certainly moaning about Arne Slot just now," Wyness said. "Xabi Alonso, from my point of view and my contacts in Spain are saying that, yes, he would be the one in waiting to come back." The report suggests the club's hierarchy is not looking beyond Alonso as their primary option should a change be made.
Alonso, who spent five successful years as a player at Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, is currently without a club after being dismissed by Real Madrid earlier this year. His managerial reputation was cemented by leading Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title, with current Liverpool players Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong key figures in that triumph. His existing connection to the club and his proven track record in Germany make him a popular figure with supporters, who have been heard chanting his name during recent matches.
The pressure on Slot has grown significantly following Liverpool's failure to mount a credible Premier League title defence after last season's triumph. A report from The Guardian indicated that the Dutchman has already triggered one of several conditions that could lead to his dismissal. Furthermore, he has been linked to a falling out with star forward Mohamed Salah, which is reportedly a factor in the Egyptian's anticipated summer exit.
Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, have reportedly begun an end-of-season review early, with Slot's future a central topic. While other managers like Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann, and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola have been linked, Alonso remains the clear favourite. The final decision may hinge on whether Liverpool secures Champions League qualification for next season; the club currently sits fifth in the Premier League table, with a tight battle for the top four spots ongoing.
For Alonso, a return to Anfield would mark a dramatic re-entry into management after his Madrid exit. For Liverpool, it would represent a shift towards a celebrated former player known for his tactical acumen, in hopes of reviving the club's fortunes. The coming weeks, with crucial European and league fixtures, are likely to determine the timing of any potential managerial change.
