Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has publicly expressed his desire for the club to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez before the close of the summer transfer window. The plea comes as Barcelona seek a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who departed upon the expiration of his contract.
Barcelona have been heavily linked with Álvarez throughout the transfer window, viewing him as their primary target to bolster their attacking options. While Chelsea’s Joao Pedro was previously considered, reports suggest the Brazilian will remain at Stamford Bridge. Atlético Madrid are reportedly resistant to selling Álvarez, who is under contract until 2030, and have even filed a complaint with FIFA regarding Barcelona’s continued pursuit.
Despite Atlético’s stance, Álvarez has reportedly informed the club of his wish to leave and is keen on a move to Camp Nou, having previously attracted interest from Arsenal. Barcelona are expected to increase their efforts to secure Álvarez’s signature following his participation in the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, though a deal is likely to cost around €150 million.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Yamal reiterated his support for the potential transfer, stating, “Everyone knows he's a top player, the kind everyone wants to play with. I've already said it: we're open to welcoming him, and if he comes, we'll all be very happy. I think he's a great fit for Barca's style. I have no idea what the situation is, but I hope so.”
Álvarez enjoyed a productive 2025-26 season with Atlético Madrid, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League. Barcelona have already confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon this summer and have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, but the addition of Álvarez would further strengthen their attacking lineup. The successful acquisition of Álvarez would position Barcelona to challenge for top honours in both La Liga and European competitions.
