Yaya Touré has been appointed as the new manager of Slovan Bratislava, the club confirmed on Saturday. The former Manchester City midfielder will take charge of the Slovakian champions for his first role as a number one, having previously served as an assistant coach at Olimpik Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny, Standard Liège, and the Saudi Arabian national team.
Touré expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating on the club’s website that “Football is my whole life.” He further added that he relishes challenges and is excited to lead a club with a rich history, a beautiful stadium, and ambitious goals. Slovan Bratislava have won the Slovakian league a record 32 times.
The Ivorian legend outlined his vision for the team, aiming to implement a dominant style of play focused on controlling matches and entertaining supporters. He is scheduled to meet with the players for the first time on Monday, marking the start of his managerial career.
Touré enjoyed a distinguished playing career, most notably spending eight years at Manchester City where he won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and a League Cup. He also represented Barcelona and Monaco, establishing himself as one of the leading midfielders of his generation. His appointment at Slovan Bratislava represents a significant step into management for the former player.
Slovan Bratislava are currently competing in European competitions, recently facing Strasbourg, and the appointment of a high-profile manager like Touré signals the club’s intent to continue competing at a high level. The move is expected to generate significant interest in the Slovakian league and could potentially elevate the club's profile on the European stage.
