Yohan Cabaye hints at potential exit amid reported Brest interest
Paris Saint-Germain's youth team manager Yohan Cabaye has cast doubt over his future at the club, acknowledging he has received interest from elsewhere. The former French international, who has been under scrutiny following reports of dysfunction within the club's academy, made the comments ahead of key youth fixtures.
According to L'Équipe, Ligue 1 side Brest have registered their interest in recruiting the 38-year-old. When asked about his future, Cabaye stated, "I have had solicitations, in France, abroad, notably in England. It is the fruit of the work I have been able to do and I take it with humility. My personal case is secondary and will always come after the club. Priority is what is going to happen here." He did not confirm any imminent departure, adding, "We will see. I am proud of everything I have done, I am enthusiastic about what is coming, because there is still a lot to do."
Cabaye arrived at PSG in 2021 to take charge of the youth setup. His tenure has recently been the subject of internal review, but he remains focused on immediate sporting objectives. The club's under-19 side is still competing in the Coupe Gambardella and is set to face Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals on April 17.
The former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace midfielder enjoyed a distinguished playing career, earning 48 caps for France and playing a key role in Lille's 2010-11 Ligue 1 title win. His transition to management at PSG was seen as a move to instill a winning mentality and professional standards within the academy ranks.
For Brest, currently performing impressively in Ligue 1, a move for a figure of Cabaye's stature and experience would represent a significant statement. His knowledge of French football and recent experience at a top club's academy could be valuable assets. The interest from England, which Cabaye alluded to, remains unspecified but likely stems from his successful four-year spell in the Premier League.
The situation leaves Cabaye's role in a state of uncertainty. While he insists his focus is on PSG's ongoing youth campaigns, his public acknowledgment of external interest suggests a departure in the summer is a possibility. His future may be clarified once the youth team's season concludes in the coming weeks.
PSG has not commented on the speculation. The club's broader project for its academy, known for producing talents like Warren Zaïre-Emery, is likely to continue regardless of Cabaye's personal decision. Any move would mark the end of a three-year chapter for the former fan favourite at the Parc des Princes.
