Dan-Axel Zagadou has extended his stay with VfB Stuttgart, signing a new contract that will keep him with the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2027. The centre-back’s extension was confirmed by Stuttgart on Friday, securing a key defensive player for the foreseeable future.
Zagadou initially joined Stuttgart in 2022, arriving on a free transfer after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired. He has become a regular fixture in the Stuttgart backline, contributing to their strong defensive performances throughout the 2023-24 season, which saw them qualify for the Champions League. However, his time at both Dortmund and Stuttgart has been punctuated by spells on the sidelines due to injury.
Speaking after the announcement, Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth highlighted Zagadou’s importance to the team. “Daxo’s footballing skills make him a valuable asset to our defence, and his personality makes him an important member of our squad. We’re looking forward to our future together,” Wohlgemuth stated. The club clearly values Zagadou’s qualities both on and off the pitch.
Zagadou himself expressed his gratitude for the club’s faith in him. “I’m very grateful for the trust the VfB management has placed in me,” he said. “I’ll do everything in my power to perform at my best for the coaching staff, the club and the fans next season. Let’s get to work and be successful together!” The player appears committed to playing a significant role in Stuttgart’s continued success.
Prior to his move to Stuttgart, Zagadou spent five seasons with Borussia Dortmund, where he showed glimpses of his potential but struggled with consistent fitness. He made over 80 appearances for Dortmund across all competitions, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2017 and 2021. The extension at Stuttgart offers Zagadou the opportunity to establish himself as a consistently reliable defender in a team on the rise. This contract extension provides stability to Stuttgart’s defense as they prepare for Champions League football next season and beyond.
