Barcelona have agreed to a two-year contract extension with defender Andreas Christensen, according to reports from MD. The deal comes as a surprise given the 30-year-old’s limited playing time over the past two seasons with the Catalan club.
Christensen has made only 23 appearances in the last two campaigns, hampered by a series of injuries. He featured for just 515 minutes this past season, but reports emerged in January suggesting President Joan Laporta was keen on offering him a new deal. Manager Hansi Flick has publicly praised Christensen, though opportunities to utilize the Danish international have been scarce, with a total of 97 appearances across four seasons since his arrival on a free transfer from Chelsea.
Negotiations between Barcelona and Christensen have been ongoing for months, as reported by MD, with the club initially proposing a significant salary reduction. An agreement has now been reached, with Flick’s faith in the player and Christensen’s desire to remain at Barcelona cited as key factors. The defender also received offers from Saudi Arabian clubs this summer, but ultimately preferred to stay with the Blaugrana, aiming to play a more prominent role under Flick next season.
The extension for Christensen may influence Barcelona’s transfer plans regarding central defenders. While Eric Garcia has been discussed as a potential option at right-back, a fully fit Christensen alongside Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Gerard Martin could lead the club to avoid a major investment in another centre-back this summer. Barcelona had previously been linked with a move for Alessandro Bastoni, but those rumours have reportedly cooled off. This suggests the club may prioritize other areas for reinforcement, given the existing options at centre-back.
