Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano and Paris Saint-Germain winger Ousmane Dembélé arranged for two buses of young people from their hometown to attend Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg at the Parc des Princes. According to a report by Canal+, the initiative, which covered all expenses and included a gift of a match shirt, was a personal project organised by the two internationals for youths from the Madeleine district of Évreux, Normandy, where both players grew up.
Upamecano had hinted at the plans a fortnight ago, stating that "all of Évreux will be there" for the high-profile European fixture. A childhood friend of the players explained the gesture to the broadcaster, noting it was the players' own idea to invite people from their old neighbourhood. The event underscores a shared commitment to their roots, despite now representing two of European football's most storied and rival clubs on the pitch.
The pair's careers have followed notable trajectories since leaving their shared origins. Dayot Upamecano, 25, developed at RB Leipzig before securing a high-profile transfer to Bayern Munich in 2021, where he has established himself as a mainstay in central defence. Ousmane Dembélé, 26, rose to prominence at Rennes before a major move to Borussia Dortmund and then Barcelona, eventually joining PSG last summer. Their paths now intersect in the latter stages of the Champions League, with a place in the final at Wembley Stadium on the line.
This act of community support occurs against a backdrop of intense sporting rivalry between their employers. The match itself carries significant weight, with PSG seeking to win their first Champions League title and Bayern Munich aiming to add to their six European crowns. For the invited guests from Évreux, however, the night was a celebration of local pride, transcending club allegiances. Such initiatives highlight the ongoing connection many elite footballers maintain with their communities, using their platform to provide unique experiences for the next generation.
