Bundesliga relegation battle intensifies with seven clubs at risk
The Bundesliga relegation fight has narrowed to seven clubs with four matchdays remaining, with bottom-placed FC Heidenheim facing the most immediate peril. According to an analysis by Bulinews, Heidenheim, VfL Wolfsburg, FC St. Pauli, 1. FC Köln, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach all remain under threat of dropping to the 2. Bundesliga, either directly or via the relegation playoff.
Heidenheim, with 19 points, sits in 18th place and faces a decisive fixture this weekend against St. Pauli. A loss would confirm their immediate relegation, while a draw would leave their fate hanging by a thread ahead of a final-day encounter with Bayern Munich. Their recent form has been inconsistent, failing to build on a key victory over Union Berlin that cost manager Steffen Baumgart his job.
Just above them, VfL Wolfsburg are on 24 points and are targeting 16th place, which would send them into a two-legged playoff against a second-division side. The Wolves have shown slight improvement, securing a fortunate 2-1 win over Union Berlin last weekend. Their run-in includes tough matches against Bayern Munich and Freiburg, but a final-day clash with St. Pauli could be pivotal for both clubs.
St. Pauli occupy that 16th playoff spot with 26 points but are struggling with a severe lack of goals, having scored a league-low 26 times. A recent 1-1 draw with Köln was a missed opportunity, and their survival likely hinges on converting chances in favourable fixtures against Heidenheim and Mainz. However, with a five-point gap to direct safety, their path likely leads to the playoff.
A cluster of four clubs sit on 31 points, five clear of the playoff place. 1. FC Köln, in 12th, appear the safest of this group due to their superior attacking output, despite losing striker Ragnar Ache to injury for the remainder of the season. Young forwards Jakub Kaminski and Saïd El Mala have contributed 27 goal involvements between them, which should provide enough firepower to secure safety.
Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen, however, face more challenging schedules. Hamburg does not play any of the current bottom six in its final four games, with all opponents residing in the top eight. Werder Bremen, buoyed by a derby win over Hamburg, has a crucial home match against Augsburg but is otherwise tasked with facing Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, and Dortmund.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, also on 31 points, possesses the leakiest defence among the group, having conceded 50 goals. Their immediate focus is a vital away match at Wolfsburg this weekend, as their final three games come against Dortmund, Augsburg, and Hoffenheim. The outcome of the Wolfsburg clash will largely determine their comfort level heading into that difficult stretch.
The final weeks of the season promise high drama, with head-to-head clashes between relegation rivals set to directly shape the survival picture. The battle for the playoff spot appears most intense, while the fight to avoid the bottom two outright remains a tense affair involving multiple clubs.
