Liverpool's Konaté and Slot Vent Frustration Over Controversial Penalty Call
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté and manager Arne Slot have voiced strong criticism of the officiating in their Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain, citing a pivotal penalty decision that went against them. The incident occurred during the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Tuesday, which Liverpool lost 2-0, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate defeat.
With Liverpool pushing forward in the 64th minute, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister went down in the penalty area following a challenge from PSG defender Willian Pacho. Referee Maurizio Mariani initially pointed to the spot but, after a review by the Video Assistant Referee, reversed his decision and waved play on. Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the match, Konaté was unequivocal in his assessment. "For me, it was an obvious penalty tonight," the French international said. "If we had gotten that penalty and scored, it would have been completely different."
Manager Arne Slot echoed his player's sentiment, suggesting a pattern of unfavourable decisions against his side this season. "I am not surprised, because we have suffered so many unfavourable decisions this season," Slot told Prime Video. He elaborated on the specific incident, stating, "If the referee had not given a penalty, the VAR would never have overturned his decision. But I have seen so many dubious penalties awarded, and some claim the VAR cannot intervene because there is contact. That is clearly what we saw."
The controversy marred what was otherwise a dominant performance by PSG over the two legs, with the French champions comfortably progressing to the semi-finals. For Liverpool, the defeat compounds a disappointing end to their European campaign, having been considered one of the favourites for the competition. The club's exit will now shift focus entirely to securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, where they currently sit third.
Konaté, who has been a mainstay in Liverpool's defence this season, has recently returned to the France national team setup and his post-match comments highlight the raw emotion following a significant European exit. Slot's remarks point to a broader frustration with the application of VAR in high-stakes matches, a topic that has been widely debated across European football this season. The Dutch coach, in his first year at Anfield, will now need to rally his squad as they aim to secure Champions League qualification for next season through their league position.
