Man Utd Sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting in £68m Deal
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP in a deal worth up to £68m, finalizing a transfer that strengthens their midfield options ahead of the Premier League run-in. The 25-year-old Portuguese international has signed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, ending months of speculation about his future.
Sporting CP announced the base fee as £47m with £21m in potential add-ons, making this one of United's most expensive midfield acquisitions. Fernandes arrives after scoring 32 goals and providing 18 assists across all competitions for Sporting last season, establishing himself as one of Europe's most productive attacking midfielders.
The move addresses United's need for creativity following Ander Herrera's departure and Paul Pogba's prolonged injury absence. Fernandes captained Sporting through their Champions League qualification campaign this season, maintaining his influential form with 15 goal contributions in 28 appearances before the transfer.
United football director John Murtough described Fernandes as 'a player of proven quality and leadership' in the club's official announcement. Sporting will receive 10% of any future transfer fee under the terms negotiated between the clubs.
Fernandes becomes the latest Portuguese player to join United's ranks, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani. His arrival comes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side push for Champions League qualification, currently sitting fifth in the Premier League table.
