PSG complete €50m signing of Lucas Hernández from Bayern Munich
Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of defender Lucas Hernández from Bayern Munich for a reported €50m fee, with the French international signing a five-year contract through 2028. The 27-year-old underwent his medical in Paris on Wednesday ahead of the formal announcement by both clubs.
Hernández arrives to bolster PSG's defensive options after four seasons in Bavaria, where he won four Bundesliga titles and the 2020 Champions League. The left-footed defender's ability to play both center-back and full-back addresses a key need for manager Luis Enrique, whose side conceded 40 league goals last season - their worst defensive record in 15 years.
Bayern opted to sell despite Hernández having one year remaining on his contract, avoiding the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 2024. The German champions had initially demanded €60m but compromised as the player pushed for the move, according to L'Équipe.
Injuries limited Hernández to just 11 Bundesliga starts last season, though he started all eight of Bayern's Champions League knockout matches. His departure follows the arrivals of Kim Min-jae and Raphaël Guerreiro as Bayern overhaul their defense under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
The transfer marks a return to France for Hernández, who began his career at Atlético Madrid before joining Bayern in 2019 for a then-Bundesliga record €80m. PSG's sporting director Luis Campos identified the World Cup winner as a priority target to add experience and tactical versatility to their back line.
