Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti has indicated the club will likely pursue a new central defender in the summer transfer window, following a disappointing draw against Verona that has complicated their Champions League qualification hopes. Spalletti highlighted shortcomings in the passing ability of current defenders Bremer and Jarell Kelly, suggesting a need for a player more comfortable initiating play from the back.
Speaking after the match, Spalletti acknowledged the strengths of Bremer and Kelly in individual duels and physical defending, but noted they “concede something” in terms of passing quality and building attacks. He emphasized the desire for a defender who can offer an alternative to Manuel Locatelli in dictating play from the defensive line, particularly after expressing frustration with Kelly’s distribution during the recent match against Milan. Reports indicate Spalletti was visibly animated on the touchline, urging Kelly to be more proactive in possession.
Several players have emerged as potential targets. Marcos Senesi, currently a free agent after his contract with Bournemouth expired, has been a long-standing interest for Juventus, though he appears set to remain in the Premier League. Data analysis from DataMB suggests Senesi excels in progressive passing and ball carrying, significantly outperforming both Bremer and Kelly in these areas. Jhon Lucumì of Bologna is also being considered, offering a similar profile to Senesi and Kelly as a left-footed centre-back.
Spalletti’s ideal target, however, is reportedly Kim Min-jae, currently at Bayern Munich. Having previously managed Kim at Napoli during their Serie A title-winning season, Spalletti is familiar with the player’s capabilities, describing him as a “Champions League defender” with exceptional technical skills. Kim also leads the Bundesliga in several key passing metrics, according to DataMB. However, Kim’s high wage demands—reportedly €10 million per year—could prove a significant obstacle, potentially requiring Juventus to consider selling Bremer to create space in the squad and wage bill.
