Aston Villa have initiated discussions with Borussia Monchengladbach regarding a potential transfer for goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas, with direct contact between the clubs now underway, according to TEAMtalk. The Europa League champions are seeking to strengthen their goalkeeping options ahead of the upcoming season and have identified the 28-year-old German as a key target.
Nicolas, who stands at 6ft 4in, is reportedly enthusiastic about a move to Villa Park, viewing it as a significant career progression. To secure his signature, Villa will need to activate a release clause of €15million (£13m / $17.5m) in full, as Premier League clubs are not eligible for any potential discounts afforded to other suitors. The Midlands club believe this fee represents good value for a proven performer in the Bundesliga.
The Gladbach number one enjoyed a productive season, starting all 34 Bundesliga matches. During this time, he registered 136 saves and 13 clean sheets, conceding 53 goals, showcasing his consistency and shot-stopping ability under pressure. Nicolas has been with Mönchengladbach since 2016, with previous loan spells contributing to his development. His commanding presence, distribution skills, and reflexes have attracted attention from several European clubs, though Villa are currently leading the chase.
Villa’s pursuit of Nicolas comes amid some uncertainty surrounding the future of current goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Liverpool have reportedly expressed tentative interest in the 33-year-old Argentine, potentially as a replacement for Alisson Becker, though they are also working to retain their current number one. Adding a younger, ambitious goalkeeper like Nicolas would align with Villa’s strategy of building squad depth to compete effectively in both domestic and European competitions. Unai Emery’s side are aiming to build on their Europa League triumph and continue their progress.
Negotiations are still in their early stages, but Nicolas’s willingness to join and the clear release clause structure could expedite the process. Mönchengladbach are keen to retain their first-choice keeper but acknowledge that a full payment of the €15million release clause would likely trigger his departure, despite previous attempts to agree new contract terms. If successful, Nicolas could become Villa’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
