Sporting CP are nearing an agreement to sign Nestory Irankunda from Watford for a fee potentially reaching €20 million, a move that will also see Bayern Munich receive a significant financial windfall. According to A Bola, negotiations are progressing, with Sporting’s current offer standing at €15 million.
Bayern originally sold Irankunda to Watford in 2025 for a reported €3 million, but crucially included a 50% sell-on clause in the transfer agreement. Should Watford achieve their desired €20 million fee from Sporting, Bayern are set to receive €10 million as a result of this clause.
Irankunda arrived at Bayern Munich from Adelaide United in the summer of 2024 for a fee of €900,000, however the young forward failed to make a senior appearance for the Bundesliga champions during his single season with the club. The move to Watford represented an opportunity for more regular first-team football, but it appears his stay at Vicarage Road will be brief.
The potential transfer represents a shrewd piece of business for Bayern, recouping a substantial sum from a player who did not feature in their first-team plans. For Sporting CP, Irankunda would add youthful pace and attacking threat to their squad, potentially bolstering their options in the Primeira Liga and European competitions. Watford, should they secure their asking price, will also make a considerable profit on a player they only recently acquired.
This deal highlights the increasing importance of sell-on clauses in modern football transfers, allowing clubs to continue to benefit from the future success of players they have previously developed or owned. The swiftness of Irankunda’s potential move from Watford to Sporting also demonstrates the dynamic nature of the current transfer market, where players can quickly move between leagues and clubs.
