Jules Koundé has affirmed his commitment to FC Barcelona, dismissing speculation about a potential transfer away from the club. The French defender spoke ahead of France’s friendly against Côte d’Ivoire, acknowledging that his recent season with Barcelona fell short of his personal standards.
Koundé admitted to experiencing minor physical issues throughout the campaign, contributing to a less impactful season compared to his previous form. He openly stated in a press conference, “From a personal point of view, I think it was a season below my standards, to be honest. It wasn’t my best season.” Despite this, he expressed his eagerness to finish the season strongly with the French national team at the upcoming Coupe du Monde.
However, Koundé was quick to shut down any suggestions that his recent form would lead to a departure from Barcelona. He emphasized that he has a contract with the club that runs until 2030, stating, “I have a contract that runs until 2030, so in my mind it’s quite clear.” He added that his focus is currently on international duty and that, “until further notice, I am at FC Barcelona and I hope to stay next season.”
The 25-year-old joined Barcelona from Sevilla in July 2022 for a reported fee of around €50 million. He has become a regular fixture in the Barcelona squad, primarily featuring at right-back, though he is also capable of playing at centre-back. Last season saw him make 37 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan giants. His versatility and defensive capabilities are highly valued by manager Xavi Hernández.
Barcelona are currently in a period of financial restructuring, and while a major overhaul of the squad is not anticipated this summer, the club may look to generate funds through player sales. Koundé’s contract situation and importance to the team, however, suggest he is not a likely candidate to be moved on. His continued presence will provide stability to the Barcelona defense as they aim to compete for titles in La Liga and the Champions League next season.
