Manchester United have been placed on alert following reports that Lewis Hall is seeking a transfer away from Newcastle United after a reported falling out with manager Eddie Howe. The news comes as a boost to United, who have identified the 21-year-old as a key target to strengthen their left-back options this summer.
Hall has been a regular performer for Newcastle this season, earning two senior international caps for England. However, his exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s final 2026 World Cup squad has reportedly caused friction, particularly after being deployed at right-back during a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in April – a match where he struggled and was subsequently substituted at half-time in the following game against Bournemouth. According to The Sun, Hall feels Howe is responsible for his World Cup omission.
Newcastle sources have strongly refuted claims of a breakdown in the relationship between Hall and Howe, describing their rapport as ‘very good’ and dismissing suggestions of an argument. Despite this, the reports have alerted United, who see Hall as a potential long-term successor to Luke Shaw. The club are prepared to act should the situation at St James’ Park deteriorate.
Hall currently has three years remaining on his contract with Newcastle, meaning the Magpies would likely demand a substantial transfer fee. They had previously planned to offer him a new contract to secure his future, but that may now be in doubt. As an alternative, United are also monitoring Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, according to Sky Sports, with his future potentially uncertain following the departure of manager Marco Silva to Benfica. Robinson, 28, has long been of interest to United.
The potential availability of Hall presents United with an opportunity to address a key area of their squad. Securing a young, promising left-back would provide competition for Shaw and ensure a long-term solution in that position. Robinson offers a more experienced, immediate option, but Hall’s potential may be more appealing to manager Michael Carrick.
