Real Betis sign defender Andrés Silva from Porto in €30m deal
Real Betis have secured the signing of Uruguayan center-back Andrés Silva from Porto in a permanent transfer worth €30m plus add-ons, the La Liga club confirmed on Tuesday. The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract through 2028 at Benito Villamarín Stadium.
Silva arrives after three seasons at Porto where he made 112 appearances, helping the Portuguese side win two Primeira Liga titles. His physical presence and progressive passing saw him emerge as one of Europe's most sought-after defenders this summer, with Betis reportedly beating competition from Premier League clubs.
The move strengthens Manuel Pellegrini's backline after Betis conceded 45 league goals last season - the worst defensive record among La Liga's top eight sides. For Porto, the transfer continues their strategy of developing and selling players at premium fees, having initially signed Silva from Danubio for €6m in 2019.
Silva's arrival could prompt tactical adjustments at Betis, with the left-footed defender offering balance to a right-sided partnership with Germán Pezzella. His distribution skills align with Pellegrini's preference for building attacks from the back.
This becomes Betis' second-most expensive signing after Nabil Fekir's 2019 acquisition, underlining their ambition to secure Champions League qualification after finishing sixth last campaign. Porto are expected to reinvest part of the fee in replacements, with young Brazilian defender Robert Renan linked as a potential target.
