Barcelona agree loan deal for Atlético Madrid's João Félix
Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign João Félix on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid, with the Catalan club covering a €4m fee and the player's wages. The 23-year-old Portuguese forward is expected in Barcelona this week to complete medical tests after personal terms were finalized.
Félix becomes Xavi Hernández's fifth summer signing as Barcelona seek attacking reinforcements following Ousmane Dembélé's departure to Paris Saint-Germain. The loan deal includes no purchase option, with Atlético keen to maintain the player's market value ahead of a potential permanent sale next summer.
The move ends a protracted standoff between Félix and Atlético manager Diego Simeone, with the player having publicly expressed his desire to join Barcelona in July. Félix scored seven goals in 20 appearances during an inconsistent six-month loan spell at Chelsea last season, having fallen out of favor at Atlético since their 2021 La Liga triumph.
Barcelona's financial limitations made a loan arrangement essential despite Félix's €250m release clause. The deal allows Atlético to remove a disruptive presence from their squad while retaining future transfer value. For Barcelona, it provides low-risk attacking depth as they prepare for Champions League group stage commitments.
