Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Darwin Nunez, challenging Newcastle United and Juventus for the striker’s signature, according to Football Insider. The 26-year-old is seeking a return to European football after a short spell with Al-Hilal, having joined the Saudi Pro League club last August.
Nunez began exploring alternative options after being dropped from Al-Hilal’s squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema. TEAMtalk first reported in February that Newcastle had initiated discussions with Nunez’s representatives regarding a potential summer transfer, with Tottenham Hotspur also showing interest. Newcastle are looking to bolster their attacking options following underwhelming performances from Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa since Alexander Isak’s departure.
Chelsea’s interest stems from their own need to strengthen the forward line and provide competition for Joao Pedro. While Nunez currently earns a substantial £400,000 per week, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey suggests the player would be willing to accept a reduced salary to facilitate a move back to Europe. This willingness to compromise increases the likelihood of a deal for any interested club.
Former Chelsea player Marcel Desailly believes Nunez would be a valuable addition to the Blues, stating that a club like Chelsea, or Manchester United, would provide the established environment the player needs to thrive. Desailly emphasized the importance of Nunez being surrounded by confident players who will readily involve him in attacking plays.
The Uruguayan international’s contract with Al-Hilal could potentially be terminated, making him available on a free transfer at the end of the season. His performance in the upcoming World Cup finals could further elevate his profile and attract greater interest from potential suitors. The competition for Nunez’s signature is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with both Newcastle and Chelsea vying for his services.
