John Smith completes £15m transfer from FC Origin to United City
United City have completed the signing of midfielder John Smith from FC Origin for a reported £15m fee, securing the 26-year-old on a four-year contract. The Premier League club confirmed the deal on Thursday, with Smith set to join preseason training immediately ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Smith leaves FC Origin after five seasons, having established himself as a key creative force in Ligue 1 with 12 assists last campaign. His technical quality and progressive passing statistics attracted multiple European clubs, but United City moved decisively to meet the French side's valuation.
The transfer addresses United City's need for midfield depth following injuries to key players last season. For FC Origin, the sale represents their largest outgoing transfer fee since 2019, providing funds to reinvest in their squad. Smith becomes United City's third summer signing after their sixth-place Premier League finish.
Manager Alex Thompson described Smith as 'a player who fits our system perfectly' during Thursday's unveiling. The midfielder could make his debut in United City's preseason friendly against AC Continental on 22 July.
