Espanyol have announced the immediate appointment of Monchi as their new General Sporting Director, the club confirmed on Saturday. The experienced football executive joins Los Pericos with three La Liga matches remaining as they fight to avoid relegation, currently holding a narrow two-point advantage over the drop zone.
Monchi’s arrival follows a period of uncertainty for Espanyol, who have been without a Sporting Director since Fran Garagarza was placed on leave earlier this season due to a heart attack. It remains unclear whether Garagarza will return to the club, but should he do so, he would report to Monchi. The new director will report directly to Owner Alan Pace and CEO Mao Ye.
Monchi expressed his gratitude to Alan Pace and highlighted the affection he felt from the club in a statement posted on social media. He stated his excitement at joining Espanyol and his commitment to repaying the trust placed in him, adding that he is prepared for the challenges ahead and hopes to achieve both immediate and future objectives.
Monchi is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in football recruitment, having previously enjoyed considerable success at Sevilla. During his time in Andalusia, he oversaw the club’s success in multiple Europa League campaigns. However, more recent years have proven more challenging, with a period of decline at Sevilla following a series of unsuccessful signings. He also had a short spell at Aston Villa that did not yield the desired results.
The appointment represents a significant move for Espanyol as they battle to maintain their La Liga status. Monchi’s experience and expertise will be crucial in rebuilding the squad and establishing a sustainable recruitment strategy, potentially securing their position in the Spanish top flight and beyond.
