Newcastle United have emerged as potential suitors for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to Sky Sports. The 25-year-old German international has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool, but Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly a long-term admirer of the player.
Nmecha joined Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023, quickly establishing himself as a key component of Edin Terzić’s midfield. He made 31 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists. His performances have drawn attention from England’s top clubs, with Newcastle now formally entering the fray.
Eddie Howe previously considered a move for Nmecha before ultimately securing the services of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan last year. Tonali’s season was cut short due to a betting investigation, and while he remains with the club, the need for midfield reinforcement persists. Nmecha offers a different profile to Tonali, providing a dynamic presence and goal threat from midfield.
Reports regarding a release clause in Nmecha’s contract are conflicting. Sky Sports state that the player has an €85 million release clause, while sources in Germany suggest no such clause is currently active, with any potential release not becoming effective until 2027. This discrepancy could significantly impact negotiations between the clubs.
Borussia Dortmund will likely be reluctant to part with Nmecha without receiving a substantial offer, given his importance to their squad. Newcastle’s participation in the Champions League next season could be a significant draw for the player, and a successful bid would provide Howe with a highly-rated midfielder to bolster his squad ahead of a demanding campaign. The potential arrival of Nmecha could further solidify Newcastle's position as a force in the Premier League.
