James Rodriguez completes €10m move from Al-Rayyan to São Paulo
Colombian playmaker James Rodríguez has joined Brazilian Serie A side São Paulo on a permanent transfer from Qatari club Al-Rayyan for a reported €10m fee. The 32-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the São Paulo-based club, with an option for a further 12 months.
São Paulo confirmed the deal on Thursday after finalizing medical tests and personal terms. The move marks Rodríguez's first return to South American football since leaving Banfield for Porto in 2010. His arrival comes as São Paulo seeks creative reinforcements while competing in the Copa Libertadores knockout stages.
Rodríguez struggled for consistency during 18 months in Qatar, managing just five goals in 24 appearances. However, his pedigree at European clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Everton – coupled with 98 international caps – made him an attractive proposition for the Brazilian outfit. Al-Rayyan reportedly sought to offload his substantial wages despite having 18 months remaining on his contract.
The transfer provides São Paulo with a high-profile replacement for departing midfielder Pablo Maia while giving Rodríguez a platform to regain match sharpness ahead of Colombia's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. His debut could come in Sunday's derby against Palmeiras.
