Aaron Ramsey Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Welsh international and former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football. The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in an emotional open letter posted on his social media channels, bringing an end to a 17-year senior career.
Ramsey, who has been a free agent since his departure from French club Nice last summer, made the announcement via a heartfelt statement. "This has not been an easy decision, but after long consideration, I have decided to retire from professional football," he wrote, addressing his fans and the clubs he represented.
Ramsey's career was defined by two distinct, high-profile chapters. He first rose to prominence at Arsenal, where he made 371 appearances across 11 seasons, scoring 65 goals and winning three FA Cups. His time in North London was highlighted by his knack for scoring in crucial finals, netting the winner in the 2014 and 2017 FA Cup finals. His form earned him a high-profile free transfer to Italian giants Juventus in 2019.
His time at Juventus, however, was marred by the persistent injury issues that had also affected his time in England. Despite arriving as a marquee signing, Ramsey struggled with fitness and consistency, making only 70 appearances across two-and-a-half seasons in Turin. He did, however, add a Serie A title, a Coppa Italia, and a Supercoppa Italiana to his trophy cabinet during his time with the Bianconeri.
In his letter, Ramsey paid tribute to the clubs he played for and the fans who supported him. He made a point of thanking the Welsh national team supporters, the 'Red Wall', for their unwavering support throughout his 84-cap international career. He also expressed deep gratitude to his family and the staff and coaches who supported him throughout his career.
Following his departure from Juventus, Ramsey had a brief, injury-disrupted spell at Rangers on loan before joining French club OGC Nice. His final season was spent in the Championship with Cardiff City, the club where his professional career began as a 16-year-old. His final act was helping Wales reach the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, their first appearance in 64 years. Aaron Ramsey retires as his country's most-capped outfield player and a modern icon of Welsh football.
