Matteo Cambiaso opens up on Italy disappointment after key Juventus role
Juventus wing-back Matteo Cambiaso has revealed he took personal disappointment from his recent Italy experience into a crucial Serie A performance against Genoa. The 24-year-old played a key role in Juventus's 2-0 victory on Monday, a result that keeps the pressure on fourth-placed Como in the race for Champions League qualification.
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Cambiaso admitted he found his time with the national team difficult after being an unused substitute for both of Italy's playoff matches against Northern Ireland and Bosnia. "I personally lived the week with the national team badly because I knew I wouldn't find space," Cambiaso said. "It was ugly, it hurt me not to play those matches. It was a big blow."
He channeled that frustration into his club display, stating his eagerness to return to action with Juventus was paramount. "Today I hoped to play. I couldn't wait, it was important for me and for the team," Cambiaso added. His dynamic movements and ability to cut inside from the flank were highlighted as instrumental in breaking down Genoa's defence, creating spaces and dangerous opportunities for his side.
The victory was vital for Juventus's ambitions, moving them within five points of third-placed Roma with four teams now tightly packed in the battle for the final Champions League spots. Cambiaso emphasized the collective discussion the squad had prior to the match. "It was an important victory especially because of the results of Como and Roma," he said. "The signal was for ourselves because we talked to each other before the game. We were good and we must continue to put pressure on Como."
Cambiaso also took time to praise teammate Michele Di Gregorio, who kept a clean sheet in goal. "I saw him very well because Michele is an extraordinary guy," Cambiaso said. "In training he is always present and I am very happy for him because he made us win a very important game. He was very good for the attitude he had."
Looking ahead to the tense final weeks of the season, Cambiaso acknowledged the challenge. "We are four teams within five points, it's a nice scrum, you have to fight," he stated. "Every point counts like gold, the next match will be very difficult seeing how it went last time." His return to form and positive mentality will be a significant asset for manager Massimiliano Allegri as Juventus seeks to secure a top-four finish.
