Torino have announced the appointment of Ignazio Abate as their new manager, with a contract extending until June 30, 2028. The decision comes after the club parted ways with Roberto D’Aversa, who had been in the role for a single season following the departure of Marco Baroni.
The Granata confirmed the change in management on Wednesday, thanking D’Aversa for his commitment and work during his time at the club. Shortly after, they unveiled Abate as his replacement, stating their delight at welcoming him back to Turin. The club’s statement included a warm welcome, saying “Bentornato a Torino!”
Abate is no stranger to the club, having played for Torino during the 2008-2009 season. His playing career began at AC Milan, where he progressed through the youth ranks and made his professional debut at the age of seventeen in 2003. He went on to make 306 appearances for Milan, winning a Serie A title and two Italian Super Cups. He also earned 22 caps for the Italian national team, reaching the final of Euro 2012 and winning a bronze medal at the 2013 Confederations Cup.
Most recently, Abate has been building a reputation as a promising young coach. He began his managerial career in the youth setup at Milan, before taking charge of the Primavera team, leading them to the semi-finals of the Youth League in 2022-23 and the final the following season. He then managed Ternana in Serie C before a successful season with Juve Stabia in Serie B, guiding them to the playoff semi-finals. This appointment represents a step up for Abate, marking his first managerial role in Serie A.
The move is seen as a long-term project for Torino, with the club clearly impressed by Abate’s developing coaching credentials and his familiarity with the club. His experience with developing young players at Milan could prove valuable as Torino look to build for the future. The appointment signals a shift in direction for the club, as they look to establish a new identity under a manager who understands the club’s history and values.
