Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly close to securing the transfer of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with personal terms already agreed and the deal progressing to its final stages. Sources at TEAMtalk indicate that only a full agreement on the transfer package and a successful medical remain before the move is complete.
The prospective transfer is expected to be a club-record fee for Tottenham, surpassing the £65 million spent on Dominic Solanke, potentially reaching around £100 million. This significant financial commitment from the club’s new ownership group, the Lewis family, signals their ambition to bolster the squad under manager Roberto De Zerbi and move away from relegation concerns.
Tonali, an Italy international, has impressed since joining Newcastle from AC Milan, becoming a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield. However, Newcastle may be persuaded to sell given the substantial offer and the need to comply with Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The price point has been influenced by recent high-value transfers, including Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City and a potential deal for a player at Nottingham Forest.
A key factor in Tonali’s willingness to move to North London is the presence of De Zerbi. The Italian manager has already engaged in positive discussions with the player, with their shared roots in Brescia fostering a strong understanding. De Zerbi’s progressive style of football and vision for the club have reportedly been persuasive. Tonali is also reportedly keen on experiencing life in London.
Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing and expected to intensify in the coming days, despite a previous offer of £85 million being rejected. While the deal is not yet finalized, Tottenham officials are optimistic about reaching a breakthrough. For Newcastle, the substantial fee would provide funds for their own transfer activity, though losing Tonali would be a significant loss to their squad. The pursuit of Tonali is reportedly separate from Tottenham’s interest in other players, including Joao Fernandes.
