Olympique Lyonnais forward Afonso Moreira is set to extend his contract with the club until 2030, according to a report from French publication L'Équipe. The new deal, which will add an additional year to his existing terms, comes after a highly productive first season for the Portuguese attacker in Ligue 1.
Moreira arrived at the Groupama Stadium last year for a fee reported to be around €2 million, a sum that now appears a significant bargain. His performances this campaign have reportedly attracted interest from several other European clubs, prompting Lyon to move swiftly to secure his long-term future. The club has not yet officially confirmed the extension, but it is understood to be a formality following the player's agreement.
The 22-year-old has been a revelation for Lyon, contributing eight goals and ten assists across all competitions this season. Beyond the statistics, his relentless energy and work rate have made him a firm favourite with the Rhône supporters. His form has been a key factor in Lyon's push for a UEFA Champions League qualification spot, with the club currently sitting third in the table, two points ahead of Lille.
In a recent interview cited by L'Équipe, Moreira made his ambitions clear, stating, "I want to reach the Champions League with Lyon, because it's important for the club and for me too, that's very clear." His potential contract extension aligns with that stated goal, signalling a commitment from both player and club to build a project capable of returning to Europe's elite competition.
The proposed new deal represents a significant piece of business for Lyon's sporting director, David Friio, and head coach, Pierre Sage. Securing a key asset whose market value has risen considerably protects the club's investment and provides stability for their attacking line. For Moreira, it offers the security to continue his development at a club where he has quickly become an integral figure, with the promise of leading the charge for continental football next season.
