Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri has reportedly identified Milan midfielder Adrien Rabiot as a key transfer target, according to reports in Italy. The potential move comes as Allegri prepares to officially take the reins at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of current Napoli midfielders Frank Anguissa and Charles De Bruyne.
Conte’s arrival at Napoli earlier this year saw a swift reshaping of the squad, most notably prioritizing the signing of Romelu Lukaku. Allegri, though yet to formally begin his tenure, faces similar challenges in optimizing his midfield options. Reports indicate that Anguissa’s relationship with the club has deteriorated, with the player seeking a new opportunity, while De Bruyne recently suffered a knee injury expected to sideline him for at least two months.
Rabiot, who joined Milan last summer, previously played under Allegri at Juventus, forming a strong professional relationship. The midfielder accepted a wage reduction to facilitate his move to Milan after a disagreement with the ownership at Marseille. He has consistently demonstrated his quality, offering a blend of physicality, technical skill, and tactical intelligence. Allegri views Rabiot as the ideal midfielder, capable of contributing both defensively and offensively, and possessing the experience to elevate Napoli’s squad.
However, a deal is contingent on several factors, including Allegri finalizing his contract with Napoli – a two-year deal with an option for a third – and the club’s ability to reduce its wage bill. Rabiot currently earns €3.5 million net per year at Milan, a figure that could rise to €4 million, and Napoli must determine whether they can accommodate his salary alongside Anguissa and De Bruyne. Milan reportedly paid €10 million for Rabiot and may seek a similar fee should they agree to sell him. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna, who previously worked with both Allegri and Rabiot at Juventus, is also a strong advocate for the player’s acquisition. A midfield featuring Rabiot alongside Stanislav Lobotka and Scott McTominay could provide a solid foundation for Napoli’s ambitions in both Serie A and the Champions League.
