Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has acknowledged speculation surrounding potential departures of key players including Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez, and Marc Cucurella this summer, stating simply, “That’s football. We'll make a good team.” The comments came in response to reports linking Fernandez with Real Madrid, Cucurella with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and Pedro with a move to Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid have emerged as rivals to Barcelona in the pursuit of Cucurella, who has hinted at a possible return to La Liga. The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer for Chelsea in recent seasons, but openly admitted during international duty with Spain that he would find it “difficult to refuse” a move back to Barcelona, while also considering the impact on his family.
Barcelona director Deco has not dismissed the possibility of signing Joao Pedro following Robert Lewandowski’s impending departure at the end of his contract. Deco emphasized that the club is evaluating all options to strengthen the squad, stating, “We’re not ruling anyone out, nor are we signing anyone.” He acknowledged the significance of Lewandowski’s exit and the need to reinforce the team.
Alonso is also reportedly considering a reunion with Edmond Tapsoba, the central defender he managed at Bayer Leverkusen. Chelsea are seeking to bolster their defensive options, and Tapsoba has been identified as a potential target. However, Leverkusen are expected to demand a “substantial” fee, particularly after Tapsoba recently signed a new long-term contract. The 27-year-old was instrumental in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title win under Alonso.
Alonso’s appointment as Chelsea manager was confirmed earlier this year, and he described the opportunity as a “beautiful project” and a “very good option.” The club will be looking to rebuild under his leadership, and these potential transfer movements represent the first steps in reshaping the squad for the 2026-27 campaign.
