Victor Lindelof secured a Europa League title with Aston Villa, playing a key role in their 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the final held in Istanbul on May 20, 2026. The Swedish defender, who was a free agent last summer, has flourished in an unexpected midfield role under manager Unai Emery.
Lindelof’s performance as a defensive midfielder was described as dominant, a tactical shift implemented by Emery this season. Emery explained that he discussed the possibility with Lindelof, who quickly understood and embraced the new position. This tactical flexibility proved crucial in Villa’s Europa League triumph, marking Emery’s fifth title in the competition.
Interestingly, Lindelof was reportedly close to joining Fiorentina last summer after his contract with Manchester United expired. The plan was for him to replace Lorenzo Comuzzo, who was potentially heading to Saudi Arabia, however the deal ultimately fell through. Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Pradè acknowledged the club’s unsuccessful pursuit of Lindelof, attributing it to Comuzzo’s decision to remain with the club despite a significant offer from Al-Hilal, managed by Simone Inzaghi, which was reportedly worth €35 million.
Pradè stated the club “did not make a good impression with Lindelof,” but the situation was tied to Comuzzo’s choice. Lindelof’s success in midfield for Aston Villa highlights a potential missed opportunity for Fiorentina, who ultimately had to adjust their transfer plans. Aston Villa’s victory secures their place in next season’s Champions League, while Lindelof’s versatile performance adds another dimension to Emery’s squad.
