Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has indicated the club anticipates a busy period of transfer activity before the window closes on September 1st. The Blues have already invested over €280 million in six new players this summer, most recently securing Morgan Rogers for a club-record fee, but Alonso suggests further additions are planned.
Chelsea, who finished tenth in the Premier League last season, are reportedly close to finalizing the signing of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and are currently engaged in negotiations with Rayo Vallecano regarding left-back Pep Chavarria. According to reports, the club is also preparing to facilitate the departures of several first-team players, including Trevoh Chalobah and David Datro Fofana, with Nicolas Jackson also potentially leaving. Young players Shumaira Mheuka and Marc Guiu are expected to be sent out on loan to gain experience.
Speaking to the media, Alonso emphasized the need for preparedness and flexibility. “We have to be ready,” he stated. “The market is open for a few weeks. We need to be aware of different positions, different situations, so for sure, we have a plan, an idea, and we need to assess in the right moments.” He acknowledged that circumstances may change until the final day of the transfer window, but reiterated the club’s commitment to building a competitive squad.
Alonso also addressed the potential partnership between Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, both of whom typically play as number tens. He confirmed that he has a plan for the two players to feature together next season, believing they can “link really well.” He highlighted the importance of achieving balance within the squad and ensuring that key players are deployed effectively to maximize the team’s competitiveness both in possession and out of it. He praised Rogers’ potential for immediate impact, stating, “You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I'm sure Morgan won't need much time to adapt.”
These moves signal a significant overhaul of the Chelsea squad under Alonso, as the club aims to climb back up the Premier League table after a disappointing campaign.
