Chelsea, under newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso, are considering a move for West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen, according to reports from The Guardian. The potential transfer could represent a setback for Liverpool, who have long been linked with the 29-year-old England international.
Alonso’s arrival at Stamford Bridge marks a significant shift in the club’s structure, granting him considerable influence over transfer decisions. Bowen has emerged as a target due to his proven goalscoring record – 139 goals in 418 appearances – and versatility, capable of playing as a right winger or centre-forward. This aligns with Chelsea’s need for experienced attacking options, particularly given the relative inexperience of some of their current forwards.
Liverpool’s interest in Bowen dates back to the tenure of former manager Jurgen Klopp, and he remains on their list of potential targets, as recently confirmed by The Athletic. However, Alonso’s appointment at Chelsea has altered the landscape, with the Blues now actively pursuing the player. West Ham’s potential relegation from the Premier League could further complicate matters, potentially forcing the club to sell key assets to raise funds.
Should West Ham be relegated, they are expected to need to generate over £100 million through player sales. Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Bowen, with some reports suggesting a potential double swoop for West Ham players worth £100 million. Despite the external interest, Bowen is said to have a strong affinity for West Ham and may consider staying to help the club achieve promotion back to the Premier League.
Beyond Bowen, Alonso is also reportedly keen on bringing Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba to Chelsea, indicating a desire to build a squad with familiar faces. Chelsea could see as many as five new players arrive this summer as Alonso seeks to reshape the squad in his image. The pursuit of Bowen represents an early indication of Alonso’s transfer strategy and his intent to strengthen Chelsea’s attacking options.
