Xabi Alonso has begun shaping his Chelsea squad by identifying seven players who are not for sale this summer, according to The Athletic. The appointments of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior as managers in recent years proved short-lived, but the arrival of Alonso signals a shift in power at Stamford Bridge, with the Spaniard granted greater control over football operations.
Since the 2022 takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have experienced considerable upheaval, and Alonso’s role extends beyond that of a traditional head coach. He is working alongside the club’s five sporting directors to overhaul the transfer strategy and determine the future of the current squad. The seven players currently deemed ‘untouchables’ are Reece James, Levi Colwill, Estevao, Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Josh Acheampong.
Captain Reece James and recently recovered Levi Colwill are central to Alonso’s plans, alongside promising winger Estevao who joined the club last year. Midfielder Moises Caicedo also features on the list, as does Joao Pedro, despite reported interest from Barcelona. Despite a recent dip in form, Cole Palmer has also been told he will not be sold, with both Manchester United and Manchester City previously linked with a move for the winger. Young defender Josh Acheampong has been reassured of regular playing time, despite speculation linking him with a transfer to Manchester United.
Notably absent from Alonso’s list are Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella. Both players have publicly expressed a desire to leave Chelsea, and Alonso appears willing to accommodate their wishes, albeit on the club’s terms. Chelsea are reportedly seeking €140 million for Fernandez, with Real Madrid and Manchester City potential destinations, while Cucurella is hoping for a return to Spain, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both possible options. Alonso is determined to avoid a repeat of the dressing room issues that plagued previous managers, and will not retain players who are not fully committed to the club.
This decisive action from Alonso signals a clear intention to build a team based on commitment and quality, and marks a significant step in Chelsea’s attempt to return to sustained success.
