Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Chelsea manager has quickly translated into transfer speculation, with reports suggesting he has identified Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva as a key target. Marca newspaper reports that Chelsea have ‘already expressed interest’ in the Portuguese midfielder, who is set to become a free agent this summer following the expiry of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Silva has confirmed he intends to make a decision on his future between the end of the season and the start of Portugal’s national team training, wanting to approach the choice with a “clear head”. While he acknowledged contact from Saudi Arabian clubs, Silva remained non-committal, stating he has “good options” and “preference orders”. He has spent nine years with Manchester City, becoming a pivotal figure in their recent success.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Silva comes after the club decided to appoint Alonso as their new manager, granting him a four-year contract and significant control over transfer policy. This represents a shift from the approach under previous head coach Liam Rosenior. Alonso’s arrival has demonstrably increased Chelsea’s appeal to potential signings.
Beyond Silva, Alonso is also reportedly interested in West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen, with Chelsea battling Liverpool and Manchester United for his signature, particularly if West Ham are relegated. Additionally, the Spaniard is keen to reunite with his former Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba at Stamford Bridge. The potential arrival of these players signals Alonso’s intent to reshape the Chelsea squad quickly.
The transfer activity could also see players move in the opposite direction, with reports suggesting a Chelsea player is attracting interest from Manchester City. Alonso has already identified a core group of players he considers “unsellable” as he begins to build his long-term vision for the club. Barcelona are also reportedly awaiting Alonso’s input on a potential Chelsea sale.
