Chelsea’s incoming manager Xabi Alonso is prepared to allow Marc Cucurella to leave the club this summer, with Manchester City emerging as potential suitors, according to reports. The move is linked to Enzo Maresca’s expected appointment as City’s new manager, with the former Chelsea boss reportedly keen on reuniting with the Spanish full-back.
Alonso officially takes charge at Stamford Bridge in July, having agreed a four-year contract, and is already assessing the current squad. Chelsea News writer Simon Philips reports that Alonso “will absolutely sell” Cucurella, who has reportedly been seeking an exit since the January transfer window. Cucurella himself recently expressed frustration with the club’s transfer strategy, suggesting a lack of focus on immediate success.
Maresca agreed terms in principle with Manchester City earlier this month, with Pep Guardiola anticipated to depart the Etihad Stadium. City are reportedly willing to pay Chelsea compensation for Maresca’s services, and are now also considering a move for Cucurella. The Cityzens are seeking to bolster their left-back options, with competition for Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nico O’Reilly in mind.
Cucurella, who is under contract with Chelsea until 2028, has made 33 Premier League appearances for the Blues this season. While his departure would create a void in the squad, Chelsea are in a strong negotiating position due to his existing contract. A transfer to Manchester City would likely provide Cucurella with the opportunity to compete for major honours under a manager he knows well. This potential move could allow Alonso to reshape the Chelsea squad to better align with his tactical vision, while simultaneously generating funds for further acquisitions.
