Xabi Alonso is poised to become Chelsea’s new manager and will immediately face a challenge regarding forward Nicolas Jackson, who has been on loan at Bayern Munich. The Senegal international was signed by Chelsea for €37 million from Villarreal in 2023 but was loaned to Bayern last summer after the arrival of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.
Despite Chelsea seemingly moving on from Jackson, data analytics firm SciSports currently rates him as the fifth-best pure centre-forward in the world, behind only Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe. His SciSkill rating has risen to 120.5 in the last six months, a period described as ‘rapid improvement’ by the firm, surpassing players like Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.
Jackson has scored 24 goals across two seasons with Chelsea, averaging a goal every 210 minutes in the Premier League. While at Bayern, he has found the net seven times in less than 1000 minutes of play, often playing in support of the prolific Harry Kane. Bundesliga expert Tom Weber notes Jackson is an “above-average, well-rounded striker” with intelligent movement, though he acknowledges inconsistencies in finishing. Ronan Murphy, a German football expert, highlighted Jackson’s importance in helping Bayern achieve a record-breaking goalscoring season in the Bundesliga.
Bayern Munich will return Jackson to Chelsea at the end of his loan, but they are unlikely to pursue a permanent deal due to his €81.5 million buyout clause. Jackson’s Estimated Transfer Value currently stands at €49 million. Alonso’s tactical preferences, favouring a quick-transition 3-4-3 formation, could influence Jackson’s future at Stamford Bridge. While Jackson possesses the mobility to fit the system, Joao Pedro’s ability to hold up the ball may make him a more natural fit. This could lead to Jackson being sold, potentially repeating a pattern of Chelsea missing out on future stars, similar to the cases of Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.
