Álvaro Arbeloa condemns racist chanting after Spain match
Spain's under-19 national team coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, has publicly condemned the racist and islamophobic chants heard during a recent friendly match between Spain and Egypt. The incident occurred during the senior international fixture in Cádiz, casting a shadow over Spanish football and prompting widespread criticism.
In comments reported by Spanish media, Arbeloa stated that such attitudes must be eradicated from stadiums and society. "Spain is not a racist country, and if it were, we would have a problem in all the stadiums, every weekend," the former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender said. He emphasized his consistent stance, adding, "We are not going to change our discourse. I continue to think the same thing, which is that we must eradicate any type of racist attitude in the stadiums and in society."
The coach, while acknowledging the problem, cautioned against generalizations about the country. He pointed to Spain's record on social progress, referencing policies on gender equality, universal healthcare, and social welfare as evidence of a tolerant society. Arbeloa argued that the nation must continue its fight against discrimination. "We are a great country, very tolerant," he said. "What usually happens in these types of cases is that we tend to generalize, but we must pursue the fight with the same force to continue eliminating these attitudes."
The incident comes at a sensitive time for Spanish football, which has faced several high-profile cases of racist abuse in recent seasons. La Liga has implemented stronger reporting protocols, but instances of discriminatory chanting from sections of crowds persist. Arbeloa's role as a youth national team coach gives his words added weight, as he is directly involved in shaping the next generation of players and the environment they develop in.
His intervention follows the formal reporting of the chants by the anti-violence commission to a local court for investigation. The football federation has also reiterated its commitment to punishing such behavior. For Arbeloa, the path forward is clear. He concluded that Spain must defend its values and continue to work tirelessly to remove racism from all aspects of the sport, ensuring stadiums are welcoming for all.
