AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen to sign Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, according to Italian transfer reporter Antonio Vitiello of Milan News and Corriere dello Sport. The Portuguese coach, who only joined Milan on June 16th after a brief spell back at Sporting CP, is said to be a ‘huge admirer’ of the Argentine centre-back, alongside Goncalo Inacio, whom he previously managed in Portugal.
Amorim’s arrival at the San Siro followed a turbulent period at Manchester United, where he was sacked in January after disagreements with director of football Jason Wilcox regarding transfer strategy and tactical approach. He oversaw a significant downturn in form for United, culminating in a 15th-place finish in the Premier League before being replaced by Michael Carrick, who subsequently secured a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.
The potential move for Martinez comes despite a frustrating 2025-26 season for the player, limited to 19 appearances across all competitions due to injuries – including ACL and calf problems – and a suspension following a red card in April. Despite these setbacks, Martinez has proven to be a key figure in the United squad when fit, even captaining the side on three occasions late last year.
Manchester United are currently reluctant to sell Martinez, viewing him as an important part of their defensive setup and aiming to strengthen, not weaken, their backline. However, with his contract expiring next year, INEOS, United’s ownership group, face a decision: either offer the 28-year-old new terms or consider a sale to secure a reasonable transfer fee.
Alongside the interest in Martinez, Milan have also reportedly approached United regarding Mason Mount, offering a potential €25m (£21.5m) deal. However, multiple sources indicate that Carrick is keen to retain Mount as part of his squad, diminishing the likelihood of that transfer. United are also reportedly pursuing alternative midfield targets following a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte.
