Ander Herrera has completed a move back to Real Saragosse, the club where he began his professional career, after a period with Boca Juniors. The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a one-year contract with the Spanish club, according to L’Équipe. The move sees Herrera return to Spain despite Saragosse’s current placement in the third tier of Spanish football.
Herrera’s transfer follows the recent termination of his contract with Boca Juniors, where he had been playing since 2022. While at Boca, Herrera’s appearances were limited by a series of injury setbacks, impacting his consistency on the pitch. He made 20 appearances for the Argentinian side, scoring twice.
Prior to joining Boca Juniors, Herrera enjoyed a successful spell in Europe, most notably with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. He featured in 284 matches combined for both clubs, including 33 appearances in the Champions League. At United, Herrera became a fan favourite during his five seasons, known for his energetic midfield play and commitment. He won the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League with the Red Devils.
He moved to PSG in 2019, where he added two Ligue 1 titles and a Coupe de France to his trophy cabinet. Herrera also earned two caps for the Spanish national team, although he was never a regular fixture in the squad.
Real Saragosse were relegated to the third tier of Spanish football, Primera Federación, in 2022, ending a long run in the second division. The club is aiming for a swift return to Liga 2, and they hope Herrera’s experience and leadership will be crucial in achieving that goal. The signing represents a significant coup for Saragosse, adding a player with considerable pedigree to their squad and signalling their ambition for promotion.
