Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as their new manager, following the departure of Arne Slot after two seasons in charge. The Spaniard arrives from Bournemouth, where he spent three seasons in the Premier League, and has signed a contract with the Reds. The club confirmed the appointment earlier today.
Iraola established himself as a Premier League manager with an attacking style of play at Bournemouth, leading the Cherries to a sixth-place finish in the 2025-2026 season, ninth in 2024-2025, and twelfth in 2023-2024. His tactical approach and focus on high-intensity football were reportedly key factors in Liverpool’s decision to pursue him.
Speaking about his squad, Iraola indicated that further recruitment is needed despite the recent arrivals of Jérémy Jacquet and Victor Munoz. “We need other reinforcements, we know that,” he stated, adding that the club is actively working to secure additional signings and that he is assisting in the process. This suggests Liverpool are not yet finished in the transfer window.
Iraola also tempered expectations for his first season, acknowledging the challenges ahead. He pointed to the departure of several key players and a number of current injuries within the squad. Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni are all facing extended periods on the sidelines, impacting the team’s preparation for the new campaign.
Despite Ekitike’s Achilles tendon injury, which will keep him out for several months, Iraola confirmed the forward remains part of his long-term plans. Liverpool will begin their Premier League season with an away fixture against Newcastle on August 23rd. The appointment of Iraola signals a shift in approach for Liverpool, with the club hoping his energetic style can reinvigorate the team after a period of transition. This move could potentially position Liverpool as strong contenders in the Premier League once more.
