Elliot Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City for a fee of £116 million has officially topped the list of most expensive transfers this summer, with total spending across Europe exceeding £1 billion as of today. The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract with City, becoming the most expensive British player of all time.
Manchester City have demonstrated significant faith in Anderson’s abilities, viewing him as a key component in their midfield evolution and a potential long-term successor to Rodri. The transfer was reportedly agreed while Anderson was on international duty with England at the World Cup, highlighting the club’s proactive approach to securing his signature. Anderson previously progressed through Newcastle United’s academy before a move to Forest.
Sandro Tonali’s transfer from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur for £92.5 million, plus potential add-ons totaling £7.5 million, represents a significant outlay for Spurs and a substantial return for Newcastle. This move marks the second largest fee received by Newcastle for an outgoing player, following Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool last summer. Spurs have been active in the transfer market, breaking their club transfer record twice in quick succession.
Further significant moves include Mateus Fernandes joining Tottenham from West Ham for £85 million, and Anthony Gordon completing his long-awaited move to Barcelona for £69.3 million. Gordon, who scored 39 goals in three-and-a-half years with Newcastle, expressed his delight at joining Barcelona, stating it was a “dream come true”. Goncalo Ramos has become AC Milan’s record signing at £63.8m, while Jeremy Jacquet has joined Liverpool from Rennes for £55 million.
Other notable transfers include Jan Paul van Hecke’s move from Brighton to Tottenham for £52 million, Andrey Santos switching Chelsea for Manchester United for £48 million, and Marc Cucurella joining Real Madrid from Chelsea for £47.5 million. Nathaniel Brown has also completed a move to Bayern Munich from Eintracht Frankfurt for £47.1 million. These high-profile moves indicate a willingness among top clubs to invest heavily in talent during this transfer window, which remains open until September 1st. The influx of cash and player movement suggests a competitive season ahead for Europe’s elite leagues.
