The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) has approached RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba with the aim of persuading him to switch international allegiance, according to reports from Bola em Campo relayed by Sky Sports. Carlos Alonso, the FAF’s vice-president, confirmed that discussions have taken place with the player while he is currently on holiday in Angola.
Lukeba, who currently has one senior international cap for France – a three-minute appearance in a friendly against Scotland in October 2023 – is eligible to represent Angola through his parents’ heritage. The FAF are hoping to capitalize on the fact that Lukeba has not yet firmly established himself in the French national team setup. Alonso stated that Lukeba “still believes he can play for France,” but the federation is presenting its project as a viable alternative.
The 21-year-old meets the criteria for a nationality switch as set by FIFA regulations. These include having not played more than three senior international matches, not having participated in a major tournament finals, and having not featured in a match for more than three years since his last appearance. Lukeba’s current situation leaves the door open for a potential switch to the Palancas Negras, as the Angolan national team is known.
Lukeba joined RB Leipzig from Lyon in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of €34 million. He has become a regular starter for Marco Rose’s side, making 31 appearances across all competitions last season. He has established himself as a promising centre-back in the Bundesliga, and his performances have attracted interest from several clubs. A switch to Angola would represent a significant development in his international career, potentially offering him more consistent playing time and a prominent role within the national team. This move could bolster Angola’s squad as they continue their international ambitions.
