Torino president Urbano Cairo will meet with Alberto Aquilani this afternoon to discuss the possibility of the former midfielder becoming the club’s new manager. Aquilani, who until recently managed Catanzaro in Serie B, is one of two leading candidates for the role, alongside Ignazio Abate.
Cairo and sporting director Petrachi will use the meeting to outline their vision for the club and hear Aquilani’s plans. Aquilani was involved in the Serie B playoffs with Catanzaro until Friday and will need to finalize his departure from the club before any deal with Torino can be completed. Abate met with Cairo and Petrachi last week and is currently considered the frontrunner for the position.
Torino are seeking a new manager after dismissing Davide D’Aversa, and Cairo is keen to avoid repeating past mistakes in the appointment process. Previous appointments of Marco Baroni and Paolo Vanoli both ended prematurely, with both managers relieved of their duties before the end of their initial two-year contracts. Cairo had hoped to build a long-term project with each of those appointments, following a three-year spell with Ivan Juric.
Cairo stated on Friday that a decision regarding the new manager will be made within a week. Both Aquilani and Abate are also reportedly candidates for the vacant managerial position at Sassuolo, with Aquilani currently favored for that role. Following today’s meeting, it will become clearer whether Aquilani has overtaken Abate in the race to manage Torino. The situation with Abate is considered simpler as his current club, Juve Stabia, are in administration.
