Arbeloa Insists Madrid Adapting to Mbappe and Bellingham
Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has acknowledged his team is still adapting its style to accommodate stars Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, following a shock 2-0 La Liga defeat to Mallorca. The loss, which dealt a blow to their title hopes, came in just the second and third games back from injury for Mbappe and Bellingham respectively. Despite the setback, Arbeloa insists the team is stronger with the pair in the side and is focused on the crucial Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Bayern Munich clash, Arbeloa was asked about integrating his returning stars. 'It’s clear that we have to play differently with Mbappé and Bellingham,' the manager stated. 'It’s clear that Mbappé has different qualities than [Brahim] Díaz, and that’s why we have to play differently. But I’m delighted to have such fantastic players available. Mbappé came here to play these kinds of matches.'
The manager was also forced to defend his use of Jude Bellingham, whose role and form have been a talking point this season. 'What’s different is that we’re a better team, I’m convinced of it,' Arbeloa said of incorporating the English midfielder. 'He has different qualities than some of his teammates... it’s a welcome problem to have to fit Bellingham into the team.'
Arbeloa, who has lost just five of his first 19 games in charge, was keen to shift the focus to the collective effort required to overcome Bayern Munich. 'To win in football, you have to do many things well in all phases of the game. To be a great team, you have to be very cohesive and have that collective mentality,' he said. He was full of praise for the German champions, managed by Vincent Kompany. 'It’s a very well-coached team; you can quickly see their identity. Kompany deserves every bit of praise because he is doing a tremendous job.'
The Spanish giants will need their star players to be at their best against a Bayern side Arbeloa described as 'very aggressive defensively' and dangerous on the counter. The manager, however, drew confidence from his team’s European pedigree. 'Real Madrid has always risen to the challenge against top rivals,' he said, looking ahead to the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. The high-stakes European tie follows a domestic stumble, and the pressure is on Mbappé, Bellingham, and their teammates to deliver a cohesive, title-continuing performance on the grandest stage.
