Arsenal are encountering significant resistance in their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Gunners have reportedly had an initial bid of £55million rejected for the Brazilian international, with Newcastle firmly stating their intention to retain his services.
Manager Mikel Arteta is known to be a long-time admirer of Guimaraes, and has internally championed the move for the 26-year-old. Arsenal have previously considered approaching Guimaraes, but Newcastle’s current stance presents a major obstacle. The club have recently generated substantial income through the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali, though the latter is reportedly on his way to Tottenham Hotspur, and are not compelled to sell another key player.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and has become a pivotal figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield. He has consistently impressed with his dynamic performances, contributing both defensively and offensively. Last season, he featured prominently for Newcastle, playing a key role in their Champions League qualification.
Romano reports that Newcastle have directly communicated to Guimaraes that he is not for sale, a message relayed to both the player and his representatives. While Arsenal may consider submitting a further, increased offer, overcoming Newcastle’s resolve will prove challenging. The situation remains fluid, but as of today, Newcastle are standing firm in their determination to keep Guimaraes at St. James’ Park. This could force Arsenal to explore alternative midfield targets as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
