Arsenal are progressing towards the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with the player reportedly agreeing personal terms on a five-year contract, according to L’Équipe. The move would see the 28-year-old return to Champions League football, a stated desire of the Brazilian international.
Guimaraes recently featured for Brazil at the World Cup, providing four assists during the tournament. He also captained Newcastle United, having joined the club from Lyon in January 2022 for a fee of €50 million plus add-ons. Arsenal have already submitted an initial bid of €70 million, which Newcastle have rejected.
Newcastle are aware that Guimaraes’ contract has only two years remaining, and are prepared to sell for the right price. The club is seeking a fee in the region of €90 million. Arsenal are expected to launch a renewed offer in the coming days in an attempt to meet Newcastle’s valuation.
Lyon are also set to benefit financially from the potential transfer. The French club included a 20% sell-on clause in the deal that took Guimaraes to Newcastle. Should the transfer be completed for around €80 million, Lyon could receive approximately €6 million. Guimaraes’ arrival would further strengthen Arsenal’s midfield options as they continue to compete at the top of the Premier League. This transfer would represent a significant outlay for Arsenal, demonstrating their ambition in the transfer market.
