Arsenal are continuing discussions with Atletico Madrid regarding a potential transfer for Argentina forward Julian Alvarez, despite Barcelona being the player’s preferred destination, according to TEAMtalk. Alvarez has publicly stated his desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, believing a transfer would be “the best thing for everyone.” He expressed this sentiment following Argentina’s recent 2-0 victory over Austria.
Sources indicate that Atletico Madrid have also enquired about Arsenal players Viktor Gyokeres and Ethan Nwaneri during ongoing negotiations between the two clubs. Arsenal have communicated their strong interest in acquiring Alvarez, submitting a formal proposal, though it currently falls short of competing offers. Despite this, Atletico reportedly favour a sale to either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain if Alvarez departs.
Should a move to Barcelona fail to materialize, Alvarez is understood to be open to joining either Arsenal or PSG, offering encouragement to both clubs. Atletico Madrid have informed Arsenal they would consider including one or two players in a deal for the Argentinian, prompting Arsenal to suggest Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Leandro Trossard as potential makeweights.
This situation presents a dilemma for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta, both of whom are known admirers of Viktor Gyokeres. The club invested significant effort in attempting to sign the Swedish forward and believe he has the potential to develop further. Whether Arsenal would be willing to part with Gyokeres to secure Alvarez remains under discussion. Arsenal’s pursuit of Alvarez is being conducted separately from their efforts to strengthen the left side of their attack, where Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is currently a primary target. The Gunners are actively pursuing both objectives simultaneously, viewing Alvarez as a potential marquee signing and Rogers as a reinforcement for their wider attacking options.
