Arsenal retain their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to reports from Italian outlet TuttoJuve. Manager Mikel Arteta has long admired the Italy international, with initial interest dating back to the January transfer window.
Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be capable of funding a move for the 26-year-old, however, Tonali is reportedly prioritizing a return to Italy. Juventus, Inter Milan, and former club AC Milan are all potential destinations, with the player seemingly favouring a move back to Serie A despite interest from several Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for a reported £60 million, and has become a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield. Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson described him as “a superstar player” earlier this year. The club are expected to demand at least £75 million for the midfielder should they decide to sell.
Arteta reportedly views Tonali as an ideal addition to his midfield, believing he would bring intensity, balance, and leadership to the squad. Manchester United are also said to be interested, seeking a playmaker to improve their tactical order and build-up play. However, overcoming Tonali’s preference for a move to Italy presents a significant challenge for both English clubs.
Arsenal recently secured the Premier League title and are still competing in the Champions League, factors that could potentially influence Tonali’s decision. The Gunners will be hoping their current success can persuade the midfielder to reconsider a move to the Emirates Stadium.
