Arsenal and Manchester City are both monitoring Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report in Portuguese newspaper A Bola. Both Premier League clubs are seeking to bolster their central midfield options, though for differing reasons.
Arsenal are looking to add depth and quality behind Declan Rice, with other targets including Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Roma’s Manu Kone. The Gunners recently saw Christian Norgaard made available for transfer and are actively exploring options to strengthen in that area. City, meanwhile, are adjusting to the departure of Bernardo Silva and face uncertainty over Rodri’s long-term future, with his contract set to expire.
Hjulmand has a release clause of €80 million (£69m) in his contract with Sporting, however the Portuguese club are reportedly willing to negotiate a sale in the range of €40-50 million (£34.5-43m) due to a gentleman’s agreement with the player. This agreement would allow Hjulmand to depart for a more reasonable fee.
Interest from AC Milan, managed by former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim – who previously worked with Hjulmand at Sporting – had initially appeared promising. However, Amorim is now prioritizing attacking reinforcements, opening the door for Premier League clubs to make a move. The report suggests Hjulmand is a lifelong Arsenal supporter and would enthusiastically welcome a transfer to the Emirates Stadium. A move to Arsenal would also represent a more affordable option than Bouaddi, who is valued at £70m.
Hjulmand has been a consistent performer for Sporting, captaining the side and demonstrating leadership qualities. He would bring experience to either Arsenal or City’s midfield. The Dane’s potential arrival could provide valuable competition and cover for existing players, contributing to sustained success for either club.
